Why resumes get rejected by ATS in India
It’s rarely “you’re not good enough.” More often the software never understood your file. Fix parse and keyword issues before you blame the market.

How to do it
- 1
Run an ATS check
Upload your current PDF/DOCX and note which categories fail — formatting and keywords are the usual culprits.
- 2
Remove layout traps
Strip tables, text boxes, icons, multi-column designs and graphics. Use a clean single-column Word/Google Docs export.
- 3
Add role keywords
Pull 8–12 must-have skills from a real JD you want and place them naturally in Skills + recent Experience.
Top rejection reasons in India
These show up again and again for IT and non-IT roles alike:
- • Fancy templates — columns and tables scramble the parse order
- • Photo + heavy design — looks nice to humans, noisy to ATS
- • Missing keywords the JD listed as mandatory
- • Non-standard headings (“My journey” instead of “Experience”)
- • Scanned PDF / image-only file with no selectable text
- • Skill list only in a graphic or sidebar the parser skips
Quick win checklist
Before the next application batch:
- • Export a plain, ATS-safe master resume
- • Keep one tailored variant per target role family (e.g. QA Lead vs SDET)
- • Re-check score after edits
Frequently asked questions
I have 10+ years experience — can ATS still reject me?+
Yes. Senior resumes often use complex layouts or assume the recruiter “will understand.” Machines don’t. Seniority doesn’t bypass parsing.
Is PDF or DOCX better?+
Both work if text is selectable. Avoid image-based PDFs. Many Indian portals accept both; test your file in an ATS checker either way.
Will fixing ATS guarantee interviews?+
No — it only gets you into the readable pile. Fit for the role, referrals and timing still matter. But a broken parse guarantees silence.
